Black and white engraving of an alchemist in a cluttered laboratory with flasks and stills, and a family visiting a poorhouse in a village scene at upper right.

An alchemist in his laboratory with his family: to the right they are shown calling at the poorhouse, destitute after the husband's failed experiments. Engraving after P. Bruegel, ca. 1558.

An engraving shows an alchemist at a cluttered workbench in a laboratory crowded with flasks, alembics, and vessels, while a woman and children stand at a doorway. In the upper right, a family in a snowy village approaches a poorhouse, a scene described in the record. Inscribed Latin verses run along the lower edge.
