An itinerant surgeon extracting stones from a man's head; symbolising the expulsion of 'folly' (insanity) Line engraving by L. van Leyden, 1524.

An engraving of a bearded, fur-collared man in a cap seated behind a seated younger man whose head he grips, bending forward with a tool. The figure in the foreground clutches his hands near his chest in a stone-like gesture, while a bowl sits at the right edge beside a dim arched niche. Fine dense hatching models the figures and draped cloth.
