King Richard III, sleeping in the night before the battle of Bosworth Field, is arraigned by seven ghosts, who tell him to "Despair and die". Engraving by E. Kirkall, 1709, after F. Boitard.
An engraving shows a man seated at a table in a draped tent, lit by a single candle, while pale ghostly figures stand at the left and a crouching figure lies at lower left. Pieces of armour lie scattered on the floor at right, and fine hatching gives the scene a dark, dramatic atmosphere.
