Profile of an elderly man, pencil drawing, c. 1794
A pencil drawing shows an elderly man in strict left profile, his hair gathered at the back of the head and a small bow at his neck above a loose collar. Fine, light hatching defines the sharp nose, furrowed cheek and heavy eyelid against a pale, plain ground. The sketch is a study of facial features rather than a finished portrait.
