Aeneas Departs from Carthage (Aeneid, Book IV)
A painted enamel plate in bright blues, greens and gold shows a shoreline story. At left, men in a small ship with a red-brown sail head away, while workers in the rocky hillside hammer and carry at a construction site. Two seated women in dark and pale gowns, labeled Dido and Anna, face each other beneath a towered castle.
Look closer: A small label reading DIDO and another reading ANNA name the two seated women.
