A uniformed Western officer with a full beard points toward the moon while a Japanese woman in a blue patterned kimono bends beside him on a raised veranda. Bamboo-lattice screens, a red-cushioned bench and a lacquered chest with a gold dragon frame the night scene under a pale full moon.
