Bamboo in Four Seasons: Summer

A hanging scroll in ink on silk shows slender bamboo stalks rising from a rocky base, their leaves drooping in loose, feathery clusters. The restrained gray washes and open space suggest a summer mood, in the bamboo-painting tradition of the Yuan dynasty.

Look closer: A small rock with a faint outline sits low at the right edge, partly hidden by bamboo stalks.
