Caius Marius on the Ruins of Carthage
An etching shows a bearded man in a draped toga seated on a fallen block of masonry, one hand raised to his face in sorrow. Behind him rise broken walls and overgrown branches, while two armed companions in helmet and turban look on at left. Fine hatching models the stone and cloth, and the title and dedication are engraved along the lower margin.
Look closer: A small bird-like figure or inscription is hard to make out on the lower margin; the engraved caption text runs along the bottom edge.
