Emperor Charles V (1500–1558)
A round enamel medallion shows a young man in profile, wearing a dark cap and a brocaded collar, against a deep blue ground. Gold inscriptions circle the field and the bright gilt rim frames the scene, showing basse-taille and painted enamel technique.
Look closer: Small gold lettering runs along the lower edge of the cloak, partly hidden by the shadowed collar.
