Engraved plate of seven labeled head portraits in two rows, with numbered markers on the skulls, used as a phrenology diagram.

Phrenological plate of seven portrait heads, 1835

A black-and-white line engraving plate shows seven head portraits in two rows, each labeled with a name in print, including Bacon, Kant, Van Dyck, Sterne and Duguesclin. Numbered markers and fine hatching on the heads and busts suggest a phrenological diagram, mapping faculties across the skull of each figure.
