Phlegmatic Profile in an Oval Frame, from Lavater's Physiognomy Essays
An engraved profile portrait of a man with long, wavy hair swept back from a high forehead, set within an oval border. His heavy-lidded eye, full lower lip and drooping jowls are drawn with fine hatching, and the word "Phlegmatic" is inscribed in script beneath. The plate illustrates a character type in a physiognomic treatise.
