A colored woodblock print shows two Western men in 19th-century dress standing at a tiled gateway, one in a dark military-style uniform with a cane, the other in a red coat and dark hat. Beyond a railing, Japanese figures in kimono gaze toward a sky banded in pink and green above trees.

Look closer: A small seated figure in a dark robe near the left railing, partly hidden by the gate pillar.
