Foreigners Studying at Night

A man in a white shirt and dark trousers reads on a red sofa at left, while a woman in a red-shouldered striped gown sits in the foreground facing a wall mirror that reflects her face. A small table holds a candle and papers, and a lamp glows near the sofa. The interior uses flat color, patterned fabrics and Western furnishings, rendered in ink and color on paper.

Look closer: A small clock sits on the wall above the sofa.
