Gathering at Lanting (Orchid Pavilion)

A carved cinnabar lacquer panel shows scholars in robes gathered in a landscape of pines, rocks and a riverside pavilion on posts, with a bridge and a small boat. Layered carving gives depth to the figures, trees and rolling water.

Look closer: A small boat drifts on the water below the pavilion, near the center of the panel.
