Lake Scene with Trees (from Cropsey Album)
A pen-and-ink landscape in which a gnarled, leafless tree leans over the water while small birds scatter across the sky. Dense hatching and dark shrubs frame the left, and a distant shore with a low tree sits on the right. The lake is rendered in loose, open strokes.
Look closer: A monogram and date, 'JMF 1854', are written in the lower left corner.
