Marble head of a bearded man with curly hair and a broken flat crown, against a dark background.

Marble portrait of the co-emperor Lucius Verus

A fragmentary marble head of a bearded man with a flat, broken crown, carved with deeply cut, wavy hair and a full curling beard. Its strong brow, heavy-lidded eyes and sculpted mustache stand out against a dark background, lit to show the warm tones of the stone.

Look closer: The flat, broken top of the head shows where the sculpture was cut or damaged.
