Marble portrait head of a bearded Roman man with curled hair, shown against a dark background.

Marble portrait of the emperor Antoninus Pius

A white marble head of a bearded man with deeply carved, curling hair and a full, combed beard, cut off at the base of the neck. The face looks straight ahead with heavy-lidded eyes and a calm, set mouth, lit against a dark background.

Look closer: Fine drill-cut channels separate the locks of hair above the brow.
