White marble statue of a muscular nude youth leaning on a club draped with a lion skin, on a gray background.

Marble statue of a youthful Hercules

A marble statue shows a muscular, nude youth standing with his weight on one leg, his left hand resting on a knotted club wrapped in a lion skin. The smooth, polished surface and idealized anatomy suggest a Roman copy of a Greek type, and the figure is shown against a plain gray backdrop.

Look closer: A small lizard or animal-like form is not visible; the tree trunk support behind the right leg has a small carved knot near the base.
