Engraving of an equestrian statue of Titus on a pedestal, with erupting Vesuvius and a military camp behind.

Plate 11: equestrian statue of Titus, seen three-quarters to the right

An engraved equestrian statue of a laureled, armored rider on a rearing-free, striding horse stands on a stone pedestal with relief panels below. Billowing smoke rises from a volcano at left, and a walled town with tents and soldiers fills the distant right. Dense hatching gives the metal and cloud their tonal depth.

Look closer: A small relief roundel with a scene of figures sits on the front of the pedestal, below the inscription.
