Retreat on an Autumn Day, in Cursive Script
A long horizontal handscroll filled with rapid, cursive brush characters in black ink on pale paper, with the strokes swelling and thinning in a rhythmic flow. The dense, unbroken lines of writing run almost the full length of the sheet, with blank margins at each end and no pictorial scene.
Look closer: The strokes at the left end of the scroll become lighter and more compressed as they approach the edge.
