A sketchbook page drawn in graphite and white gouache on blue paper. A tall, square stone tower rises at left above a long arcade of rounded arches that recedes toward the right, where a further building and a faint hillside line close the view. The horizon is low and the sky is left as bare paper, giving the scene a quiet, open feel.

Look closer: Handwritten inscription 'Roman Campagna, Nov. 12, 1868' in the lower left corner.
