Screen with European Figures (obverse)

A square-cornered plaque of painted enamel framed in gilt scrollwork shows a group of richly dressed European-looking figures gathered on a grassy slope beside a tall tree. Several white horses stand among them, one carrying a rider in a feathered hat, while a red flag rises at right beneath billowing clouds.

Look closer: A small figure in a red coat stands at the far left beside the trunk of the tree, partly hidden by the foliage.
