Painted self-portrait of a bearded man with orange hair in a blue jacket, holding a palette, against swirling blue brushstrokes.

Self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh, 1888

A man with swept-back orange hair and a red-orange beard turns his face three-quarters toward the viewer, set against a background of swirling blue brushstrokes. He wears a blue jacket over a white collar and holds a wooden palette with dabs of paint at lower left. The thick, directional brushwork and bold complementary contrast of blue and orange give the painting its energy.
