Study for "Fortune" by Elihu Vedder, ca. 1899
A pastel crayon study on lilac-gray paper shows a female figure seen from the front, legs and torso partly veiled by billowing drapery swirling above and below. White highlights model the flesh and folds, and an inscription in pencil at lower right reads "Study for Fortune" with the artist's name. The figure's arms are raised, and the pose is loosely sketched.
