Two Heads of Lions, graphite drawing, c. 1789

Two graphite studies of lion heads sketched on tan paper, one above the other: the upper head turns in three-quarter view with a wind-blown mane, while the lower head faces forward with a heavily shaded brow and muzzle. Fine hatched lines model the fur and the sober, intent expressions, giving the sheet a careful, close-observed quality.
